I have a great respect for the trees.
A formidable organism, which easily outpaces our lifespans, a tree sends our thoughts reeling about the fragility of life and the passage of time.
When one stops and looks up at the gentle behemoths striking and stretching their branches into the pale blue sky, radiating fresh oxygen, casting cooling shadows, and accenting a neighborhood with foliage, rather than phone lines, one can't help but respect them.

All too often, the leaves and branches are seen as a hassle, or a liability for homeowner's insurance. For example, my wife's childhood neighborhood used to be heavily populated with trees, lining the road just 20 years ago. Tree-by-tree, the neighborhood became barren, ugly, and dominated by power lines. I wish those beautiful giants were still here. Their leaves would help the compost pile and the neighborhood would seem 100% more pleasant to walk through.
This rant aside, I want to save my additional argument for the ignorance of tree types and rarity for later and drop a great bargain.
I joined the Arbor Day Foundation for just 10 bucks. I will be "repaid" with ten, local flowering tree species, a calendar , and two lilacs.

I can't wait to get them in the mail and find them a good home.
Ten bucks is a great deal for the opportunity to repair what generations before me had no consideration or prudence to leave thriving, beautiful, and living.

The Eastern White Pine. Edible inner bark, edible pine cone seeds, and one of the tallest, longest-lived trees of this region! I see these on our walks in the neighborhood and I've identified them. My wife and I's favorite tree. They can live 500 years plus. Now plant one and think about the year 2515. Warning: they loose a lot of branches during wind storms.
